January 2021
Odda Magazine
As the crazy year that was 2020 comes to an end, Violet Chachki brought in the 2021 new year with a feature in Odda Magazine. In it she wears the fabulous Sarah Sokol Millinery swoopy eye saucer – one of my favorite pieces.
In the feature, Violet talks about spending time by herself reflecting on how best to move forward into the new year. She is quoted saying "What are my expectations for 2021? I do not like the word expectations. I don’t expect anything. I am hopeful. I am super hopeful. I don’t think anyone would describe me as an optimist. I would describe myself as a realist. But right now I am so optimistic about the future and what it holds in the unknown and I think everything has been so rough and so bad that it really can only go up from here.” Cheers to that!
Violet Chachki has left an indelible mark on the fashion world through a unique blend of vintage glamor, avant-garde sensibilities, and a profound understanding of fashion history. Emerging as a standout contestant and eventual winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 7, Violet captivated audiences with her polished and daring aesthetic, characterized by corsetry, fetish wear influences, and meticulous attention to detail. Her signature style, often described as "burlesque meets high fashion," incorporates elements of 1940s pin-up, 1950s couture silhouettes, and a modern edge that pushes the boundaries of drag fashion.
Photographed by Yana Yatsuk, Violet is seen wearing the Swoopy Eye Saucer with a Christian Cowan dress, gloves by Lidow Archive, earrings by Anabela Chan. She is seen next to a fruit stand with a sign that says “no mask, no service.” Juxtaposed with her fabulous ensemble and full drag eye makeup, the pandemic scene speaks to the moment. We all must live through hard times, but a little dash of fun and fabulous fashion can make it a little easier at times. I know I spent most of the lockdown creating fun headpieces for myself to pass the time and express myself creatively.
The Swoopy Eye Saucer is one of my favorite pieces because of its dramatic and dynamic structure, as well as its versatility in styling. It is carefully crafted using couture millinery techniques that result in a piece of wearable artwork. By crafting it with time-honored hat making techniques, the result is a stand-out piece of couture fashion that can be worn and styled in many different ways. This piece in particular creates a standout look that makes the viewer do a double-take – the perfect piece for any event or editorial photoshoot. The way it frames the face draws attention to the wearer and the cut out right at the eye creates mystery and allure.
Violet Chachki is the perfect icon to wear the swoopy eye saucer. “She is a reference of our culture and a bright ray of light into the future,” said Odda Magazine. She was part of ‘’The Art of Teese’’ directed byDita Von Tease in 2017, wonRuPaul’s Drag Race season 7 and attendedthe Met Gala in 2019 making History at the first Met Gala attended by Drag Queens. Many artists struggled throughout the pandemic and Violet is decidedly looking towards a brighter future. Icons like her remind us to look forward to what’s next.
